Current Volunteer Positions

English as a Second Language Teacher

US Together needs volunteers to help teach weekly English classes for our employment program. Learning conversational English is very important to successful resettlement and integration for all refugees coming to Ohio. You will work with Us Together staff to plan lessons for ESL classes, create activities for conversation groups, answer student’s questions, and work with groups of students that have a wide range of English proficiency.  Volunteers make it possible to give individuals the additional help they may need.

Requirements: TESOL certification required.  Must have availability during regular business hours and be able to make a 6-month commitment. Must be willing to complete orientation and be able to pass a criminal background check.

Conversation Partner or ESL tutor

Regular conversation in a second language is crucial to a person learning and improving their new language.  Volunteering as a conversation partner or ESL tutor involves giving one-on-one English help to a refugee living in central Ohio.  You will be able to make a positive impact on the life of an individual or family by helping them learn the English language at their own pace.

Requirements: Minimum commitment of 1 hour per week for 6 months.  Meetings to be scheduled according to refugee and volunteer availability. Must be willing to complete orientation and be able to pass a criminal background check.

Cultural Adjustment Mentor

Adjusting to a completely different life in the United States can be a difficult thing for new refugees.  As a cultural adjustment mentor you will be able to work with an individual or family to help them feel more at home in the US.  Volunteers are encouraged to introduce clients to resources near them (libraries, community organizations, etc.), show them different cultural aspects of Columbus (museums, cultural districts, monuments, etc.), and help them learn practical skills that may be new (budgeting, how to navigate COTA, using a computer, etc.)  A mentorship like this is not only extremely beneficial for the refugee, but also allows the volunteer to personally connect with an individual that comes from a situation completely different from their own.

Requirements: Minimum commitment of meeting 2-4 times per month for 6 months.  Must be willing to complete orientation and be able to pass a criminal background check.

Professional Mentor

An important part of successful resettlement for refugees is finding employment.  As a mentor in this program you will be able to use your own professional acumen to help clients develop skills to find jobs in their desired field or advance in the field they are already in.  This work involves assisting a client with resume writing, job searches, and networking, as well as helping them develop any skills that may help them in their career.

Requirements: Minimum commitment of meeting 1 hour per week for 3 months. Must have a strong professional background and be willing to share your knowledge with others.  Must be willing to complete orientation and able to pass a criminal background check.
