In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, many schools, including schools in the Cleveland Metropolitan School District (CMSD), have decided to begin the school year completely remote. This poses a challenge to many families, including some refugee and immigrant families we serve. US Together has been working on a Remote Learning Mentoring program to alleviate some of these challenges by pairing volunteer mentors with students to:

  1. Help students and families plan and coordinate remote learning schedules (many families may only have one Chromebook for multiple children in school)

  2. Facilitate communication between teachers and families

  3. Help students with their homework and classroom assignments

  4. Teach students basic study skills and how to use Chromebook/internet, help with English, and be creative with educational activities that can support our students!

We have 40 outstanding volunteer mentors who have committed to supporting these students for 4.5 months (until winter break). Everyone has participated in a remote mentoring orientation, and has been given a plethora of materials to help them be the best mentors possible! Our mentors will be matched with their remote learning mentees by the end of this week. We are very excited to be providing this support to refugee families in need, and it wouldn’t be possible without our amazing volunteers!
