Meet the Artists of Making Home: A Refugee and Immigrant Art Exhibition! Part 2!
Less than one month until US Together’s Making Home opening night event at Current Gallery! Today, we are pleased to introduce a few of the refugee and immigrant Artists whose artwork will be on display at the First-Annual Refugee and Immigrant Art Exhibition!
Augusto Bordelois
is a professional Artist from Havana, Cuba. Bordelois graduated from the University of Havana with a major in English Language and Literature and has also studied various fine arts, including sculpture, ceramics, drawing, and painting. His visual artwork has been awarded much recognition in Cuba as well as competitions in the United States. He has participated in more than 130 national and international group shows and 35 solo exhibitions. His work is also part of the permanent collection of Cleveland Marshall College of Law / Cleveland State University and The Artists Archives of the Western Reserve (AAWR). Currently, he owns and directs Augusto Fine Art Studio and Art Center in Berea, Ohio, where he works and teaches classes. We are also honored to include Bordelois in this year's artist panel.
Mariela Paz
is an Artist and owner of Sabor Miami Café and Gallery from Honduras. At Sabor Miami Café, you can find an array of multicultural flavors such as Cuban, Honduran, Peruvian, and Mexican. With an assortment of both sweet and savory entrees, you're bound to find a new favorite dish with bursts of Latin infusion flavors. In addition to various delicious food and beverages, Sabor Miami features vibrant artwork that covers the walls. All the art was created by Mariela herself, who was a graphic designer before opening Sabor Miami Café and Gallery! Mariela regularly holds painting events for community members, combining both her passions of art and food. We are also honored to include Paz in this year's artist panel.
Kubra Al-hilali
is an Artist and refugee from Baghdad, Iraq, specializing in fine art and painting. She wants to encourage other refugees like herself with unique skills to start their own businesses and have a source of their own income. She works in various media, from pencil and paper to paint on wood or canvas, scanning images and using a computer if the situation calls for it. She often integrates Arabic calligraphy—a representation of her culture—into her pieces with messages of hope and love.
Will Sanchez
is a local writer, graphic designer, and Artist of Mexican descent. Sanchez has been nominated for the COSE Business & Innovation Award, named to several boards, including Julia De Burgos Cultural Arts Center, Hispanic Roundtable Community Development Co-chair, Metro Hospital VIC, and more. Despite this, he continues to refer to his artistic career as "His little hobby." In his work, Sanchez pays homage to his faith through painting and mixed media, which combines Judeo-Christian symbolism with dark subject matter. "I try to express myself and push my talent to wherever I can get it to in whatever piece I'm working on.” Sanchez is now the proud owner of La Cosecha Galeria in the Stockyard neighborhood of Cleveland. We are also honored to include Sanchez in this year's artist panel.
Mariia Kharevych
is an Artist from Ukraine who specializes in painting. Kharevych has been drawing and painting for most of her life, her passion for art eventually driving her to start selling her pieces. Now, she has been selling her paintings for about 12 years and enjoys painting on various materials, including paper and glass, including candles, vases, pitchers, and more. Her subject material includes scenery as well as people, especially children.
