Meet US Together's Amazing Youth Mentors!
US Together’s Remote Learning Mentoring Program would not be possible without our amazing youth mentor volunteers, and we’d like to introduce you to some of them!
Many US Together youth mentors come from Case Western Reserve University’s “Students for Refugees”, which is a student led group that strives for better refugee awareness, engagement and advocacy. This group has been a close partner of US Together since July of 2020 when the group was established. Not only do students in the group volunteer for US Together and work directly with Cleveland’s new refugees, but they advocate for our clients, gather donations, and spread US Together news such as current fundraiser or donation needs.
Peter Chin, a member of Students for Refugees, is a group leader of Case student-mentors, meaning he works with a group of tutors assigned to a refugee family, and ensure the family and tutors are getting the support they need. Peter’s assigned refugee family has even requested extra tutoring from Case students, so he’s had to recruit more volunteers for the job!
Students for Refugee’s current president, Rita Lakhssassi, described why the Remote Learning Mentoring Program has been so essential for refugee youth, stating:
“RLMP has been vital for refugee youth's educational and social wellbeing. Not only do students get unique and tailored 1:1 sessions, they also get to connect to a peer. The mentor relationship goes beyond tutoring, alleviating the educational and social problems many youth are facing due to the pandemic.”
Rita also mentioned how vital the RLMP has been for the student mentors as well:
“CWRU students have said multiple times that they learn more from their students than their students do from them. Through this experience, they have learned to navigate language barriers, grow their sense of empathy and communication skills, as well as have a meaningful relationship with an individual they otherwise would not have.”
We are so grateful to work with such amazing students at Case Western Reserve University and our Remote Learning Mentoring Program or Summer Youth Program would not be possible without their hard work!
