Meet Faraji – A Future Participant of US Together’s Summer Youth Program!

We’d like to introduce you to one of the amazing kids who will be participating in US Together’s Summer Youth Program, Faraji!

One of Faraji’s favorite subjects is art, because she enjoys being creative through drawing and painting

Faraji is a refugee from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and she came Cleveland in 2018 with her mother, two older brothers and older sister. Faraji is 14 years old and just finished her 8th grade year at Thomas Jefferson Newcomers Academy last week!

While speaking with Faraji, we learned that she genuinely loves going to school and learning! Her favorite subjects are math and art. She finds math to be easier than all of her other subjects, and art gives her a chance to be creative through drawing and painting. When she’s older, Faraji would like to follow in her brother’s footsteps by attending college and studying math and science. Her dream job is to one day be a dentist!

During our conversation, Faraji admitted that the past year of remote learning was difficult because it’s harder to understand what’s going on in class over video, but that US Together’s Remote Learning Mentoring Program helped make the transition into online schooling a bit easier. Throughout the year, Faraji’s amazing youth mentor from Case Western Reserve University, Danielle, tutored Faraji in science, and will continue to work with her on science and math over the summer. (Did we mention how awesome our youth mentors in the Remote Learning Mentoring Program are?)

When she’s not participating in Summer school or the UST’s Summer Program, Faraji is looking forward to staying home, reading, hanging out with friends, going on scooter rides, and taking lots of pictures! She is also looking forward to practicing Yoga in the Summer Youth Program, because Faraji loves to be active and learn new things!

While US Together’s Summer Youth Program is quickly approaching, there is still plenty of time to support Cleveland’s refugee youth by donating today! Each donation will go towards art, music and yoga facilitators, as well as supplies for these fun and holistic activities!
