Hawana’s Sweets and Kitchen is Open for Business!
Ammar, the owner of Hawana’s Sweets and Kitchen, is from Syria and he came to the United States in 2016 with his wife and 3 children. He started Hawana’s Sweets and Kitchen because he wants to share his culture and traditional Middle Eastern sweets with the local community including the large Middle Eastern community here in Cleveland. He hopes his new bakery located at 11730 Lorain Avenue, which opened earlier this year in March, can contribute positively to his new community here in the greater Cleveland area while also helping him make a better life for his family.
Ammar owned his own restaurant in Syria. For generations, his family from his great-great grandfather and great grandfather to his father and Ammar himself have been in the food business. When Ammar lived in Jordan, he also worked as a chef in a restaurant there. Ammar loves cooking sweets and sharing these with people. He loves to see people happy and enjoying his delicious desserts and this in turn brings him joy as well.
You can get a variety of Middle Eastern desserts at Hawana’s Sweets and Kitchen including baklava, knafeh, mafrouka, halawet-el jibn (sweet cheese rolls), Arabic ice cream, as well as other sweet cheese and nut desserts. Knafeh is a sweet cheese dessert made with flour, cheese, sugar, and syrup, which is topped with nuts such as pistachios or cashews. Mafrouka is similar to knafeh but contains more pistachios and is topped with a sprinkling of these on top as well. In Middle Eastern culture, these types of sweets are popular for not only celebrations such as weddings or breaking the fast during Ramadan, but also as a sweet treat after lunch or dinner. They pair well with coffee or tea.
